The students of first batch of PGP visited Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL), Sambalpur on October 12, 2015. Mr. KV Pillai HOD-HRD greeted the students with zeal and gave a short presentation on the structure and functioning of MCL. With more than 22,000 employees, and operations spread over thousands of kilometres of land, it is one of the most well managed firms in India. A video describing the company’s operations and mining process added glamour to the presentation. The idea was to see and learn every domain of the company, from open-cast and underground mining to supply of unprocessed coal to washery. From assessing the quality of coal in lab to delivering it to the respective client, all was taught to the students with utmost enthusiasm.
The tour of the facility comprised of visit to the 2MW Solar Power plant in MCL’s Anand Vihar facility, followed by the visit to corporate office in Jagrati Vihar. Another short information session was organised for the students at the Jagriti Vihar facility.
Students also got an opportunity to meet Sri A.N. Sahay, CMD and Chairman, MCL; along with directors of two core divisions of MCL. Sri Sahay while interacting with the students said, ‘Always maintain transparency in whatever you do, so that it never comes to bite you in the back. Think about the people around you who need help and try to help them in whatever way possible. Environment is a depleting resource, adopt practices to protect it’. He explained the CSR activities undertaken by MCL in great details. He also mentioned some great undertakings initiated by MCL, such as the purchase of an International Hockey team, creation of the 3rd National Garden in Sambalpur and several upcoming infrastructure developments. This was followed by a Q&A session.
The last phase of the trip included a visit to the Officer’s Club and the Golf Course. The club comprised of state-of-the-art gymnasium, swimming pools and many indoor/outdoor sports facilitates.
