IIM Sambalpur at a Glance
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for IIM Sambalpur's permanent campus via video conference on 2 January 2021. The campus was subsequently built on roughly 200 acres in Basantpur village near Goshala, Sambalpur City — about 5 km from Hirakud Railway Station, 27 km from Sambalpur district headquarters, and 55 km from Jharsuguda Airport.
Envisioned by founding director Prof. Mahadeo Jaiswal, the campus draws on regional art, with Odisha's traditional IKAT textile-dyeing pattern worked into the brick facades.
The campus is fully Wi-Fi enabled and centrally air-conditioned, and holds a 4-star GRIHA sustainability rating. Water-saving fixtures, dual-flush systems, and treated wastewater reuse for irrigation and flushing reduce water consumption, while rooftop solar panels, LED lighting, and ECBC-compliant equipment cut electricity use. Living areas are designed for full daylighting and natural ventilation.
Major buildings include the Koutilya Administration Building, the Thakshasila 1 and 2 academic blocks, the Konark Auditorium, the I2 Hub (incubation, innovation and library), a Faculty Block, and an MDP Block with a guest house. All buildings include ramps and accessible restrooms. The library runs 24/7, and classrooms combine chalkboards, digital boards, and blended boards, with notes shared directly to students' phones.
Residential facilities include 11 hostels (four for women, five for men, each with 60 single-occupancy rooms, plus a separate hostel for PhD scholars), totaling 600 beds, along with a dining hall seating about 500. Faculty and staff residences house 100+ occupants, alongside the Director's Bungalow and a Community Centre. Around a thousand trees have been planted across the grounds.
Additional amenities include a shopping complex, an activity block, and sports facilities — an open-air theatre, tennis courts, and football and volleyball grounds.
